Capricorn - Surf and Turf - Very Serious poetry contest!

Post by Sushidragon »

"Capricorn, the tenth sign of the zodiac, is all about hard work. Those born under this sign are more than happy to put in a full day at the office, realizing that it will likely take a lot of those days to get to the top. That's no problem, since Capricorns are both ambitious and determined: they will get there." -Astrology.com

Capricorn/Seeker fancies himself a poet. A Very Serious poet. If you'd like to impress him, you should show him some of your Very Serious poetry. And discuss it with him, at length.

What's that? You don't have any Very Serious poetry? I guess you'd better get writing, then! Your task is to create an unintentionally amusing, so bad it's funny, Very Serious poem! Here's an example from Seeker about his love of writing poetry:
Goat and fish though I may be,
I take my art quite seriously.
While I swim through stormy waters,
Or leap from mountain cliffs that totter,
I write my words down in my head
Then scribe them 'fore I go to bed
So I may share them with the world
And see ideas that unfold.
You can tell he takes this very seriously, but.. it's just not a very good poem, is it. Rhyming 'world' with 'unfold?' I think someone needs to let him know that poems don't always have to rhyme..

Rules and info!

- There is a limit of one entry per person. Please just enter on PI or the Sam forum!
- Once you've posted your poem, you can edit your post for minor spelling errors and such, but please don't make huuuuge changes.
- Your poem should have something to do with Samanayrs and/or the Samanayr world, otherwise go nuts! Very strong emotions would probably help.
- Your poem must rhyme, because all Very Serious poems do. The rhyming scheme and meter are up to you.
- Purple prose, thesaurus abuse, and forced rhymes will give your poem that extra zing!

Entries will be judged on creativity, use of the elements mentioned above (purple prose etc), and unintentional humor! In addition to Seeker, there will also be prizes for second and third place:

Trait Amulet - Fin Tail
To enter, please post your entry here so that all may revel in its wonderfulness! This will be open until September 24, 8pm PDT/Sept 25, 4:00 PI time - good luck!

I am a misery who lives in a tree

I don't come from land or sea
I'm just a simple misery
I come from my mother, yes its true
I think its the same for me and you
Twiddle and twattle a baby a'swattle
left to live alone
No binky, blanky or baby bottle
for all the love shone

I live alone, my tree ice blue
all my birds, they have flew
I tell no one where I may be
hoping no one will bother me
splish and splash just a dash
the water oh so clear
but through the splash I must bash
through any fear

So follow thee to my tree
ite beautiful you will see
no telling where is the tree
could be land or sea
but find it and find me
because its my home.

Misery of the frozen stream pushes a piece of paper to rg. His black eyes show little emotion but it is obvious by his body language that he is very proud of his entry.

Misery: that poem took me a solid 10 minutes to do! It pairs with my life and past and future and all that stuff. I wanted you to see my pain and feel my joy and happiness. I have a willow tree by the way. I made it rhyme really good and I set it up with precision! So if you have any hints for me....keep them to yourself.

RG: o.o; forgive him......that's all I can say.

It seems misery feels he is a regular poe. He doesn't seem to know too much about structure....

The Hero's Epic Ballad

An epic ballad this must be
To win my mares don’t you see?
I hear tell that mares like those poet types
-though I do not see why the hype-
So I will spin a tale of epic woe
And one of a solitary great hero

Oh his hooves were like fire
Striking at the frosty air
Churning, burning
Through the crunchy earth
Chasing down with great mirth

His coat was like a tawny gold lion
And it seemed like he was barely tryin’
For no harsh rasp escaped his maw
As he did not tarry to jaw

He ran forth with valiant strength
Stride by stride, length by length
He ate up the dirt with great appetite
Until his quarry was in his sights

The monster reared its ugly head
From its dark pools of eyes, it wanted him dead
But he stood strong and true
And pretty handsome too

Thundering on taloned paws
The beast ran forth with gaping jaws
As demon’s fangs gleamed in the light
But he did not flee from the fight

The creature took a mighty leap
But his ground he did keep
Before pushing up into a rear
For he alone had no fear

His hooves struck the foe’s ugly face
But the monster did not break his pace
And so the hero did toss his rack
And sent the cursed beastie back

He slung his bow with expert ease
And nothing did more please
Him than drawing it taut
To prove that he was more than naught

And so the notched arrow waited
While the evil foe could not be sated
He had him in his violet sight
And so went the arrows flight

Straight and true, striking the heart
And with life the beast did part
Letting out a horrible squeak
The quest was no longer to be seeked

The warrior was satisfied
That the vile creature had finally died
And now all were safe and sound
Due to the bravest stallion, hooves down!

So. Here’s how this… um… “inspiring epic” came to be:

Pride: What is that? *eyeing the computer screen*
Seren: Well it’s one of the new contests! See? Poetry.
Pride: *reads Seeker’s work and makes a noise* Why would they do that?
Seren: Well… um… to express emotions and make a point using clever wording and rhyme?
Pride: *shakes head* What is in it foyr the wyriter?
Seren: Well… um… I guess some girls like romantic poets I guess…
Pride: You mean mayres? *perks up* Mayres like that?
Seren: Well some, yeah… Pride…
Pride: Leave me. I’m talking to my muse. *already pulling out a paper from the desk and staring at it*
Seren: *sighs and leaves*

*a few days later*

Seren: *glaring at Latin homework on the screen, suddenly jumping when an arrow flies through the air and hits the wall A FEW INCHES FROM MY ____ HEAD* (I think I’ve lost a few months of my life from that experience.)
Pride: yread it! *comes strutting in carrying his bow slung over one wing*
Seren: Pride! You could have killed me! *holding head to check and make sure*
Pride: *makes a pfft noise* Dyrama. Now. Be amazed.
Seren: *sighs and tears of the paper pinned by the arrow and starts reading, biting lip*
Pride: *struts smugly and glares at the kitten who darts away, before humming impatiently* You like?
Seren: Pff… pff… *freezes at the glare* Oh yeah! Its… it… gr-*chokes on the word* eeaaattt.
Pride: *nods, satisfied* I spent many houyrs on it.
Seren: hey… when did this happen?
Pride: *gets all puffed up* It’s all tyrue! It’s my epic quest! I defeated the beast befoyre it could make off with those foolish aiyrheads you love so much!
Seren: Um… are you sure… that a… well a… squirrel could do that?
Pride: IT WAS YRABID! *shrieks angrily and stomps off*

Stealing decided to try her hand at poetry:
Image

Day and night mean naught to me,
Darkness hangs 'round constantly.
Where I live there is no sky,
And admiring the beauty takes a keen eye.
At first glance things might look bleak,
No food or water, only rock.
But all you have to do is seek,
Allure you will find, perhaps as a shock.
Our secret garden thrives,
And enriches all our lives.

Leaf's Ode to His Hero, the Tyrannosaurus Rex

Image

I wish I weyre a dinosauyr
So all the woyrld could heayr me yroayr.
I'd gnash and bayre my teeth, so fieyrce
Though no-one's hide I'd actually pieyrce.
A gentle giant, such as I
In mock battle only would I vie.
I'd never huyrt a single soul
Guayrdian, pyrotectoyr, that's my yrole.
But such awe would I inspiyre
Unless I met an icky black spideyr.
Then I might just yrun away
To live and brawl anotheyr day!

For some reason, Slice is always the one writing poems for these things. Like he's the only muse with any poetic ability. It's kinda wierding my out. >_>

Image

Long ago t'was mentioned to me
That I did look quite like Sa'Krien.
Though jokingly those words were said
My mind did meet with fear and dread;
For if my fool brother could see it true,
Then what keeps me from fright'ning you?

My father saw it plain as day,
My crimson eyes that did not sway,
And swept me 'way from thy Mystic kin
To taint them naught with thy crimson sin.
For long I wandered, lost, alone,
Until one day light fin'lly shone.

For you see I found true kin
In these Sams claimed born of sin.
More like me than my own fool family,
They seek no more than home, understanding.
I needn't fear them like ever'one else
I've found love you see, in my once tragic house.

So I shall not leave here, not now and not ever
For I shall belong here where no one dares wand'r.
Peaceful and happy in my own precious home
Looked down on no longer, and never alone.
I live here with kin, not in blood but in bond
Away in this forest with my beloved Outcast Song.

Dunno if my poem's 'unintentionally hilarious' enough, since I chose a Very Serious subject that Scarce insisted I go with... but I'm just happy I finally found some uninterrupted time to enter. XD

Image
Scarce would like to tell the tale of the elemental he met in his travels (the story I entered in one of Sushi's contests to try to win him with, here)...

One morn upon the glowing sands
I did trot with wandering eye,
Searching ceaselessly for the lands
Where water never runneth dry.
Though I sought with greatest courage,
Time did pass and soon discourage,
Leaving me with naught to forage
Making me regret my tourage.

Just as I lay prone, life waning,
Dreams of cool, blue liquid fading,
Forthwith a sound; my ears, straining,
Did hear a splash, as of wading.
Lifted myself and moved so fleet,
And what my pale blue orbs did greet
But Elemental; water, sweet
Like nectar, dripping to her feet.

Doubtlessly my mouth hung down wide
As I espied her oasis.
Verdant kellys and azure tides,
Only dreams could be the basis!
She approached me, giggling soft,
I could feel my heart soar, aloft;
On aqua perfume it did waft.
But her gaze spake that she had scoffed.

Sadly I turned, and made to part,
But laughter quelled, she had come near.
A gift, to me, she did impart:
A golden rod. She disappeared.
From that day forth, my magic grew;
I journeyed far with strength anew,
Making rivers grow from mere dew,
Remembering that mare.

Now, shoo.

Newbie Poem

I'm very new to this place
I don't even have one
So getting one would be ace
And learning about this world I'm not even done
I hear that their are something called rainbow songs
I'd very much like to learn that tune
Though I hope they aren't played on gongs
I hear that some are decorated by rune
I've seen many markings on them
And they have many mutations
So I decided to get to know them
I'm loving them and may go play in the fountains

There is a Sam I plan to commission if I ever get a custom slot... She is based, in great part, upon a particular a particular breed of black corvid that you might recognize as you read this.... Although she doesn't technically exist yet, some day she will. Until then, this poem is anonymous...

-------------------------------------------------------------

Once upon a hot spring rainbow, next to illiayr with bright glow,
Over many a bright and colorful coat of Sam-ish 'fro,
While I galloped, nearly flying, suddenly there came a crying,
As of some Sam loudly vying, vying on the hot spring floor.
`'Tis just racing,' I muttered, `vying on the hot spring floor-
Only games, and nothing more'

So thunderously I heard them from between the growing plant stems,
As each separate shouting voice calls its cheer upon the shore.
Eagerly I wished to see it; - Sprinting ran through the back door
From the shouts, catcalls and roars - excitement for the running war -
For the swift and nimble Sam whom would win the running war -
Famous here for evermore.

And the silken manes unfurling flapping of each breezes swirling
Thrilled me - filled me with fantastic delights ne'er felt before;
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating
`'Tis a wonderful thing competing to run on hot spring floor -
`'Tis a wonderful thing competing to run on hot spring floor -
This is it, the time to soar,'

Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
`Sir,' said I, `or Madam, entry to your racing I implore;
But the fact is I was hoping, and you don't want me for moping,
That you'd let me go a-loping, loping on the hot spring floor,
Please admit me to your racing' - here I stepped with hoof at fore; -
Running there, and nothing more.

Deep into that hot spring jungle, worried I would only bungle,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no racing Sam had dared to dream before;
But the silence soon was broken, and the starting gave no notion,
Of the only Sam there woken with the shouted words, `Now go!'
So important, but just one Sam heard those starting words , `Now go!'
Only me and no Sam more.

So around the hot spring tearing, all my soul within me daring,
Soon again I saw the starting line as unmoving as before.
`Surely,' said I, `surely someone else ran at the summons;
Let me see then, what my threat is, and this mystery explore -
Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore; -
Or I'll just win and nothing more!'

With no Sam behind me following, I, in my win, was wallowing,
And then finally a movement at the starting shore...
Apparently the first leg; of this great race: just the trailhead;
Had begun with an obstacle meant to make the racers snore-
Perched in tree, a Sa'grisayr, a song to make the racers snore -
A lullaby, but I was simply earless; nothing more.

I've been as purple as an autumn eve
Since the day that I was born;
And midnight's deepest hues do interweave,
My mane and tail to adorn.
Yet from these late hours I wished to leave,
Forever seeking the morn.
And then oh, the stallion I espied! We've
Found ways to ne'er be forlorn.

Mm, Amethyst? I think it would mean more if you saved your *cough*talents*cough* for Seeker alone. XP

Beautiful, beautiful poems, all! Seeker laughed, he cried, he admired everyone's beautiful rhymes. Such depth of emotion just explodes forth from the Samanayrs who tried their hooves.. paws.. claws.. whatever, at poetry!

First place is oakleafwolf - love the use of a The Raven's rhyme and meter to go with the Very Serious subject of racing! The thrill of the chase! The fear of the fall! The.. deliciousness of getting past an obstacle!

Second place is Seren - a very epic ballad indeed! I'm sure it will impress many a mare, and just in time for breeding season :D

And third place is cassiadawn - I wish I could fly too ;_;

Congrats to the winners, and thank you all for your entries :D Seeker and I appreciate your artistic endeavors!
