Technically exam week started on Monday, but I got a horrible exam schedule with all my exams in the last week so I could procrastinate and then die! My first one is the worst, tomorrow at 7:00pm, on the weekend AND at night AND one of the hardest ones.

Thanks for the compliments about 4 Calling Birds, she was fun to draw :D

Let's relax and offer Orasteele just a little more of your patience. We appreciate everyone hanging out as we deal with real life and cheer Steele on as she writes out this RP Expedition. I can understand how you guys might be anxious to begin- but grab a snack, pull up a chair, and get those typing hands ready.

edit: My post time was 9:11, faboo.

-------------------------

Dawn rises over a blank of dusty white sending ribbons of light glinting off of every surface. Winter has arrived to the Rainbow Hotsprings, and with it all of the tidings of joy that come about as the year comes to a close. As the sun rises over the tree line a small group of Samanayrs gather to seek out the hidden treasures beneath the cold blanket of winter’s white embrace. An air of anticipation and wonderment rides through the band as each imagines what may be in waiting. Carry-baskets strapped tight the Sharians nod that all is set for the day’s exploration to begin.

North from the Sharian encampment the morning sun glints across a snow field, accentuating the crystalline bed of white as if it were peppered with diamonds. The air was crisp and the faint scent of pine and mint was in the air- a taste of Christmas incarnate. The sky stretched on forever, pale blue with a few puffs of lazy cloud cover perhaps hinting at a future snow fall. Only a few trees stood out among the endless white, leaves long since fallen and bare branches stretching upwards. There were hills and lower banks, plenty of places to explore and hide… or possibly provide an adventurous samanayr the perfect place for an adventure fort.

To the west a partially decorated pine forest looms just beyond the horizon. Bells chimed up above as a breeze tickled across several strands of holiday garland. Like fairies nesting in the trees, Christmas lights already strung around trunks and in branches glinted and twinkled- red, green, blue, purple… every color imaginable like starlight. Large, velvet bows of red and green hung like bowties around the massive oak and pine trees. Half-hung ribbons hemmed in gold and silver billowed in the wind waiting for another decorator to take up ‘arms’ and finish the job. Wrapped parcels and packages, little sacks decorated with sewn on patches and string sat in bundles here and there as they waited for their designated trees to be properly dressed. The snow hadn’t completely made it in through the thick tree cover and outcropping, but a bank of it pooled around the edges and like spilled sugar it dusted across the dark green pine needles and oak leaves.

East of the encampment an ice cave lies in wait, rather spooky at first glance. The ‘maw’ of an entrance stretched open as if a giant creature of some sort had been frozen mid-yawn. Stalactite and stalagmite ‘teeth’ were scattered around the mouth, providing small gaps and areas of entrance for the more adventurous explorer. Small puffs and plumes of icy white steam billowed out, further pushing the idea that this was no cave but something a little more sinister. Upon closer inspection, the exterior and some of the visible interior was made entirely of thick ice rock- translucent and sparkling with a glassy, almost pearly sheen.

Whip snorted, and controlled his tail with a bit of difficulty. It wouldn't do to hit one of the Sharians with his stinger, even if the basket was a bit to tight for his liking. In his experience, living as he did at the edge of a jungle, something tight wrapped around him would more likely than not be a giant snake, intent on eating him. Granted, said snake often ended up dead, and it's hide decorating his nest. That's what they got for messing with a Sa'krien.

He eyed the Misery with some trepidation. He knew nothing of this one, and was rather glad, deep down, that none of his mares were here. You never know who they might try to steal away. Not that his mares would leave him. He treated them right, and made sure they were safe. Snap and Fissure could take care of themselves alright too, it was his Oath that he had a real soft spot for. Not that he showed it. Fissure'd dump him in the stream again, and who knows what Snap might do if she knew. He brought little gifts back for each of them whenever he went out, things like feathers or flowers. Sometimes a shiny rock or gem.

He shook his head then, and cast one more glance over the others arranged here. He's placed himself on the end, putting a bit of distance between them and himself. Soft, most of them looked to him. Wouldn't be able to handle themselves in his jungle. He snorted again, and shook his head. Glancing at the Sharian for permission, Whip struck out for the ice cave. He doubted whether the others would go there, and he knew he could take care of himself. He was a Sa'krien, after all.

He eyed the rock walls with interest as he neared the cave. They had nothing like this near his home, and the rock was nice and shiny. Pretty too, and his mares might like some to have around the cave. He paused, sniffing at a smallish piece, wondering if he might be able to take some home with him once the expedition was done.

((Ohhh, I have missed playing with him! *grins* Such a softy too, towards his mares, though he doesn't show it XD ))

Triumph pranced and shifted excitedly as a helpful Sharian tugged gently at her baskets one last time to make certain that they were securely settled on her sides. She had already handed him her precious quill pen with an entreaty to hold it safe for her. She didn't want to risk loosing her precious feather or having it mistaken for a common Lamanayr feather that she was turning in later. The Sharian had chuckled and tucked the pen away, promising to return it when she came back with her findings. And now it was almost time to begin! Triumph had heard tales of these expeditions before, and she had dearly wanted to participate in one. Surely finding the ingredients they needed was the least she could do to pay the Sharians back for the time and effort they had spent helping her learn to read and write.

As the final nod was given Triumph exploded into the air in a flurry of leathery wings and snow, only to promptly go into a hover. Now...which way to go? She spun in a slow circle in the air above the starting field, long draconic tail almost brushing the tips of the snow covered grass. One way a forest, decorated for the season, further on, an open snowy field, and to the next point, a mysterious cave. She could go look in one of them for little treasures. But which?

The forest? No, she thought not, though it was quite pretty. But all those decorations would be a distraction. The field? She'd been to plenty of fields before, though the breeze coming from that direction smelled delicious. Briefly she started towards the open field, then paused, her eye straying back to the eerie cave mouth. What tales might she find lurking in there?

With a final nod Triumph turned away from the snowy field and beat her wings strongly, heading towards the cave. Not without one last glance at the sweet scented meadow. She promised herself that after this was over she was going to take a look there, just for fun. But for now...the cave. It took very little time to reach the mouth of the cave, and soon she was standing before it, feeling the soft puffs of air on her face, ruffling her hair, tugging at her wings. Hesitantly she moved closer, feeling the irregular stream of air dance over her body. Her black eyes opened wide with awe as she stared at the shimmering surface of the stone that made up the cave.

As though in a trance Triumph moved closer, eyes fixed upon the gleaming 'teeth' of the cave in fascination. Her mouth moved silently as she started to create a story about this place, completely oblivious to the presence of the Sa'krien standing nearby, examining the intriguing stone himself. Then, as a sudden gust of steam billowed warmly around her she woke with a shake to her task. Flicking her wings open once more she hopped right into the 'mouth' itself without even looking around outside to see what wonders awaited within. A tickle of fear tugged at her, but she owed it to the Sharians to continue. Pushing slowly deeper into the cave she examined the walls. Deeper inside they weren't so perfectly smooth as the rock near the mouth was, and there were plenty of crevices in which a tiny treasure might be lodged. Sticking to the right hand wall, nose practically touching the stone, Triumph worked her way deeper into the cave.

Amid the beautiful, icy wonderland that spanned in front of the fidged and foreboding Ice Cave entrance stood Glow of the Autumn Rose, her soft, pink color seeming to radiate from her, intensified by the white of the perfect snow around her. Having left the encampment as soon as she was prepared for the exciting expedition that was organized by the Sharians, she adjusted her carrying basket and headed East, knowing that where she was going would be the most likely place for amazing treasure, but there was certainly a price paid for it. As her hooves crunched through the layers of sparkling snow, dazzling by the light of the sun that spanned overhead, she felt her chest tighten as she ruffled her wing feathers at the sight that lay before her.

The Ice Cave's Entrance loomed before her like an icy, open grin of death, it's caverns encased from stalagtite to stalagmite in beautiful, but deadly ice. Glow of the Autumn Rose felt a terrible chill shiver through her as she thought of what she was about to do...and it occurred to her that her shivering had nothing to do with the cold that surrounded her. Shaking her head from side to side quickly to shake off the unpleasant sensation in the pit of her stomach, her golden brown mane waving as she did so, she lifted her head squarely, opened her wings to make herself feel a little bigger, and cautiously started her journey into the icy depths of the great, jagged maw.

Slipping right as her front hooves hit the icy entrance, the inertia of her step sent her flying into the icy cave, narrowly escaping the stagmites! Her scream echoed off the icy walls, sending the stagtites falling straight for her from the cieling, making her wish that she'd kept her mouth shut as the roar of the icy wind blasted past her as she continued to slide down into the depths of the cave! Pushing against one of the stalagmites she was passing, she narrowly escaped being impaled to death from above by a few falling stalagtites, but things only got worse! As she rushed and slid through the icy concourses of cave openings, the she was soon enveloped in complete and utter darkness. She was practically blind! How in the world was she going to see anything?

Finally coming to rest somewhere in the great, terrible depths of the Ice Cave, the quiet of the cave encasing her almost as securely as the ice encased the walls, she waited in silent fear, afraid to even move. What was she going to do now?

Against the stark white of the winter snows stood a scowling samanayr, seen only by the bright green and coal black markings against his camouflaged white fur, and the conspicuous glint of sunlight of vibrant green spines. He had stood tense but still as the Sharians fiddled, attempting to attach the wicker baskets the were the standard fare for every samanayr around his razor spines. It had taken longer than was the norm, and so Poison was one of the last to slouch out towards the open.

He raised his head and glared around at the bleak landscape… The snow fields were wide, perhaps wide enough to lose the others and be alone for a few minutes, but the sun glinting from it blinded him even from this distance! The forest he counted out instantly… Who wanted to risk getting tangled in streamers or bows just for the chance to find a few trinkets? With a last calculating glance, he set off towards the rather dangerous looking caves to the east. It was spooky enough to ward off most searchers, so it would be relatively quiet… Just what he had hoped for! And it would be dark and cool inside, which suited him perfectly.

Lengthening his stride, it didn't take him long to reach the spiky, 'tooth'-filled entrance. Drat! Three other the others had chosen this place to search as well. Furious with himself, he cast his eyes back and forth along the many different nooks and crannies, before choosing one a little off to the edge. It seemed disconnected from the main tunnel, and was nearly out of his reach, but with a bit of jumping he managed to get a hold and wriggle his way in. Inside it was dark, but not so much so that he couldn't see, and there was enough room for him to stand and stretch his legs. The floor had only a few scuffed footsteps, so he guessed that he had chosen well. Few others had been this way, and with a satisfied huff he walked further into the tunnel.

A breath of strangely warm steam disturbed the freezing, still air like the breathing of an animal, and for a minute Poison froze. Then, with a scowl, he remembered the steam that had issued from the main entrance. Obviously there were hotsprings further in, not some great monster… Annoyed with himself for the moment of fear, he turned his attention to scuffing the floor with his hooves as he walked, looking for anything of interest.

Luster of the Faded Sapphire was cold. Very cold. Winter wasn’t her favorite time of year; the terrible chill cut right through her coat and into her bones. All month she had been avoiding open spaces where the wind could buffet her, cuddled against her stallion and her sister mares in a defiant attempt to forget that winter had come. Even so, she’d found herself shivering more than once, and the blue and black mare reluctantly admitted that escape was no longer an option.

The expedition, at least, offered a distraction. Being the third mare in her song, Luster didn’t think she was a particularly special creature. If she found something fabulous, though, that might put her on a more even level with her graceful and elegant sisters. Luster wasn’t graceful or elegant. She was cute and cuddly and a little clumsy, not the best traits for impressing her stallion!

And so, here she was. Standing among the other seven samanayrs who had shown up for the search, she again felt relatively unimpressive; in this crowd, however, that might be for the best. A misery, a sa’krien…the company she was keeping was more than a little dangerous. Fortunately, as the Sharians sent the group off into the cold, the scarier members of the party seemed to not notice the mare in the slightest. As an added bonus, the wind seemed to be less obnoxious than it had been before!

Cheerful, Luster gazed at the scenery, examining her options and watching the rest of the group. So many were setting off for the cave…the scariest place! And scary sams were going in there! That was the least appetizing location to the spotted mare. The forest looked interesting, green and glittering with tiny shiny points to catch the curious eye. It was the snow field that drew her forward. Endless white snow…that she could run through, leaving huge sam-shaped holes! It wasn’t the easiest thing, moving forward, but it sure was fun.

Darting away from the group, she frolicked for a few minutes as she puts some distance between herself and the others. The snow covered most everything, giving no clues at all to where something might be hiding. Into the depths, then! She located a snowdrift that looked promising, and dove straight into the middle of it, digging herself a bit of a tunnel.
